Oral Language Assessment Package
This Package contains:
- the Make A Picture Receptive Language Game; and,
- the Animal Sorting Game.

The Make A Picture Receptive Language Game
This wonderfully engaging assessment task has been illustrated by the very talented author and artist of Wiradjuri descent, Renee Fogarty. Children will enjoy choosing the required colourful, magnetised character(s) or item(s) and creating their own story by placing them wherever they like on the Picture Scene.
The Make A Picture Receptive Language Game assessment tool consists of two parts:
- Understanding sentence structures and concepts;
- Understanding and using context-dependent spoken language.
Understanding sentence structures and concepts
Children are required to understand spoken sentences of varying length and complexity. The sentences reflect the semantics, syntax and morphology of both Aboriginal English and Standard Australian English. This section has been designed using the ‘take and place’ format recommended by Gould (2008).
Understanding context-dependent spoken language
This section assesses the child’s ability to take context into account when interpreting spoken language. The use of context-dependent language has been observed as an important language skill displayed by First Peoples speakers of English (Gould, 2008).

The Animal Sorting Game
The Animal Sorting Game has been designed to enable the gathering of assessment data describing a child’s vocabulary knowledge and categorisation skills. The toy animals suggested for use with this activity are generally interesting to children, including Australia’s First Peoples children.
The two components of the Oral Language Assessment Package contain the following items.
The Make A Picture Receptive Language Game
This component contains:
- A manual, including rationale, administration and analysis information;
- The Make A Picture Stimulus Book;
- The Make A Picture Background Scene;
- Reproducible record forms.
The Animal Sorting Game
This component contains:
- A manual, including rationale, administration and analysis information;
- Reproducible record forms.
